General information, not financial advice

Use this as a starting list

Education-loan paperwork depends on the lender, the course, the country and whether security is needed. The items below are commonly asked for, but they are not a complete or guaranteed list. Confirm the current requirements with your lender before collecting papers. Ask which documents need originals, copies, translations or certification.

Keep a separate folder for the student's papers and the co-applicant's papers. Make sure names and dates match across the documents. If something differs, ask the lender how it should be corrected or explained. Preparing early can make the process easier to organise, but no checklist promises approval or a particular processing time.

Admission and course costs

An admission letter is commonly used to identify the university, course and intake. A fee structure helps the lender understand tuition and payment dates. Ask the university for its official fee page or a current written breakdown if the information is unclear. A visa-related document may also be asked for, depending on the application stage.

Keep tuition separate from living costs, travel and other expenses in your budget. A government proof-of-funds amount is not a full course budget. If the course costs are in a foreign currency, note the exchange rate used for your rupee estimate. Ask the lender what costs can be included and what evidence it needs for each item.

Identity and academic records

Identity and address checks are often described as KYC. A passport, Aadhaar, PAN and address evidence may be requested, depending on the lender's rules. Confirm the exact list and the accepted format with the lender. Only share personal documents through a channel that you have verified belongs to the institution handling your application.

Academic marksheets, degree certificates and relevant entrance or language-test results are also commonly asked for. These may include IELTS, TOEFL or GRE results where applicable to the course. Not every student needs every test. Use the university's admission conditions and the lender's document list rather than assuming all named tests are required.

Co-applicant income and bank statements

A co-applicant is another person who signs the loan agreement and shares repayment responsibility. Lenders commonly ask for that person's identity, address and income evidence. The accepted evidence can differ for salaried, self-employed and other applicants. Ask what documents are needed for the co-applicant's actual situation rather than following a generic list blindly.

Bank statements may be requested for a specified period. The home-page checklist suggests six to twelve months as a preparation guide, not a fixed rule for every lender. Confirm the required period and whether statements must be downloaded, stamped or supplied in another format. Do not assume that a particular income document guarantees that the loan will be accepted.

Collateral papers, if needed

Some loans involve collateral, such as property or deposits offered as security. If collateral is required, the lender will give a separate list of ownership and supporting papers. The exact documents depend on the asset and the lender. Ask who will review them and whether there are legal or valuation charges.

Do not hand over original property papers without understanding the process and obtaining the appropriate acknowledgement. Read the agreement to understand the responsibilities of the borrower, co-applicant and security provider. This site cannot assess title documents or tell you whether an asset will be accepted. Confirm these matters directly with the lender and a qualified professional where needed.

A final check before sending anything

Ask for the lender's current checklist in writing. Check that the application channel and contact details are genuine. Keep copies of what you submit and a record of any requests for further information. Read the loan terms separately from the document list: having papers ready does not mean the interest, fees or repayment schedule suit your family.
