General information, not financial advice

Living funds and tuition are different

When you compare study destinations, separate the money needed for living from the university's tuition fees. Some countries set a minimum amount that students must show for a visa. A university may also publish its own cost estimate. Neither figure automatically tells you the full amount needed for your course and time abroad.

The amounts below were reviewed on 25 October 2026 using the listed sources. Government requirements and university budgets serve different purposes. Check the official instructions for your application, household and course. Tuition, travel and other charges may sit outside a living-funds figure. Do not turn a minimum into a complete education-loan budget.

Germany: a blocked-account amount

The standard German student blocked-account amount is EUR 11,904 per year, equivalent to EUR 992 per month. At the exchange rate of Rs 106.31 for one euro, the yearly amount is about Rs 12.7 lakh. A blocked account is a way of showing funds for living expenses, subject to the rules that apply to your stay.

This is not a tuition estimate. Tuition depends heavily on the university and course. Many German public universities charge little or no tuition, but confirm that with your university. Other charges and living expenses still need checking. Read the responsible German mission's current instructions before arranging funds or making an application.

UK: London and outside London

Prodigy Finance cites UK Student visa living funds of GBP 1,171 a month outside London or GBP 1,529 a month in London, for up to nine months. Using the rate of Rs 126.99 per pound, that is about Rs 13.4 lakh outside London or Rs 17.5 lakh in London for nine months.

Course fees are separate. Check the official university fee page for your course and the current GOV.UK requirements for evidence of funds. The amount required can depend on your circumstances and relevant exemptions. The visa calculation is not a promise that your actual rent and everyday expenses will fit within that minimum.

Canada: outside Quebec

For a single applicant outside Quebec, the stated living-funds requirement is CAD 23,448 for applications from 1 September 2026. At the rate of Rs 67.81 for one Canadian dollar, that is about Rs 15.9 lakh. This living amount is separate from tuition and transportation, and Quebec has its own requirements.

Check the current official instructions for the date you apply and for any accompanying family members. Do not assume that the amount for a single student also covers others. Tuition depends on the university and course, so use the official fee page rather than a general country total.

USA: university examples, not one visa minimum

The University of Iowa page lists USD 23,712 as a 2025-26 annual living estimate for its specified international graduate education programs. At Rs 95.1 per dollar, that is about Rs 22.5 lakh. This is a university estimate for a particular context, not a national government minimum for every student.

The Johns Hopkins 2025-26 ITGL sheet lists housing USD 17,081, food USD 5,062, miscellaneous personal expenses USD 3,548, transportation USD 2,244, and books and supplies USD 1,320. These five living lines total USD 29,255, about Rs 27.8 lakh at the same rate. Health insurance USD 3,292 is listed separately and is not included in this living total. Together, the Iowa and Johns Hopkins examples give a living range of about Rs 22.5 to 27.8 lakh per year. They are university estimates, not a government minimum.

The Johns Hopkins sheet lists annual tuition of USD 63,360 for that program in 2025-26, about Rs 60 lakh at the same rate. This is one private-university example only. It is not typical tuition for all USA courses and must not be added blindly to another university's living estimate.

Use conversions carefully

Market rates from the sources listed are as of 23 October 2026: one euro is Rs 106.31, one pound Rs 126.99, one Canadian dollar Rs 67.81, and one US dollar Rs 95.1. Rates are as of 23 October 2026 and will move. Your bank may use a different rate and add charges. Rupee amounts are rounded illustrations, not a quote for a transfer.

Build your budget from your own university's fees and living estimates, then check government requirements separately. Use the calculator to explore repayment only after deciding what expenses the loan must cover. Rules and amounts change. Always confirm on the official government or university site before applying.
