General information, not financial advice

If you searched for the SBI education loan interest rate this month, you may have found two different answers. Some guides still show 8.65 percent and 9.15 percent. SBI's own table, updated on 22 October 2026, shows 9.65 percent and 9.15 percent from 15 October 2026. This post explains what changed, what it does to an EMI, and what to ask before you sign. Rates move, so every figure here carries a date.

The short answer

  • SBI Global Ed-Vantage rates in SBI's table dated 15 October 2026: 9.65 percent for most collateral and takeover bands, 9.15 percent for a with-collateral band at select institutions.
  • The rates are floating, so they can change during the loan.
  • On Rs 30 lakh repaid over 10 years, the difference between 9.15 percent and 9.65 percent is about Rs 800 to Rs 850 a month.
  • The RBI raised the repo rate by 0.25 percentage points to 5.50 percent on 7 October 2026. SBI raised its lending benchmarks by the same amount from 15 October 2026.

What changed, step by step

  1. 7 October 2026: the RBI's Monetary Policy Committee raised the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 percent and changed its stance to "calibrated tightening".
  2. 15 October 2026: SBI raised its external benchmark lending rate (EBLR) from 7.90 percent plus spreads to 8.15 percent plus spreads, and its repo linked lending rate (RLLR) from 7.50 percent plus spread to 7.75 percent plus spread, as reported by BankingFinance.in.
  3. SBI's education loan table (w.e.f. 15.10.2026, last updated 22-10-2026) says the rate is linked to an external benchmark: EBR equals repo rate plus spread. It currently shows repo 5.50 percent plus spread 2.65 percent, so EBR is 8.15 percent. That EBR is not what you pay. Your rate is set by the table band your loan falls into.

What it means for an EMI (illustration, not a quote)

These figures assume Rs 30 lakh outstanding when repayment starts, repaid over 10 years, with no moratorium interest, fees or later rate changes.

EMI illustration, 29 October 2026, not a quote
RateEMI (about)Total interest (about)
9.15 percentRs 38,200 to Rs 38,300Rs 15.8 to 15.9 lakh
9.65 percentRs 39,000 to Rs 39,100Rs 16.8 to 16.9 lakh
  • The monthly difference is about Rs 800 to Rs 850. Over 10 years that is about Rs 98,000 to Rs 99,000 more.
  • On Rs 20 lakh the monthly difference is about Rs 540 to Rs 550. On Rs 40 lakh it is about Rs 1,090 to Rs 1,100.
  • A 0.25 percentage point rise on Rs 30 lakh adds about Rs 400 to Rs 410 a month.
  • If your EMI stays fixed instead, the loan runs a few months longer. In this example about 4 extra months.

The part many families miss: the moratorium

While you study, interest keeps building. SBI's scheme page states simple interest during the course plus the moratorium, with accrued moratorium interest added to principal. A rate that is 0.50 percentage points higher means about Rs 15,000 more simple interest a year on Rs 30 lakh. Over a 2 year course and a 6 month moratorium that is about Rs 37,500 more, before it is added to the loan. This is simple arithmetic, not a quote from the bank.

Paying interest while studying lowers that build-up. Test both options in the calculator.

Floating rate: what actually happens when rates rise

A floating rate follows the loan's reset schedule, so a hike may not show up on the same day. When the rate rises, the bank can raise your EMI or extend your tenure. A Business Today report on SBI's home loan revision tells borrowers to ask SBI which will happen. Ask the same question for an education loan. We have not verified SBI's reset schedule for education loans, and we do not know what rate any individual borrower pays. That is in your sanction letter.

Five questions to ask SBI, or any bank, in writing

  1. Which benchmark and spread apply to my loan, and how often does the rate reset?
  2. If the rate rises, does my EMI go up or does my tenure get longer?
  3. Is my college a "select institution" for your rate table, and where is that written?
  4. During the course and moratorium, how is interest charged, and is unpaid interest added to the loan?
  5. If my first job is delayed, what changes to my EMI start date or interest?

Marketplaces and lender sites are useful for comparing lenders, but their rates can be older than a bank's own table. For example, GyanDhan's US education loan guide, updated 29 July 2026, lists SBI Global Ed-Vantage at 8.65 percent and 9.15 percent. That is before SBI's 15 October 2026 table. GyanDhan's guide is useful on US visa rules and lender types. Credible's page on international student loans is built for US study: it explains that most private lenders want a US cosigner, and it notes that Credible is paid by partner lenders. It has no India-specific rules. Use these pages for context. For a rate, read the bank's own table and check its date. We do not recommend or rank any lender or marketplace.

Should you wait for rates to fall?

This site cannot tell you that. The RBI's stance is "calibrated tightening", which does not promise either direction, and we do not predict rates. What you can do is test your plan at a rate half a point to one point higher than today. If the EMI is still comfortable, the loan is safer. Reality Check shows this against a cautious first salary.
