General information, not financial advice
A USA MS loan is more than a tuition payment. Keep tuition, living expenses and visa fees separate before deciding how much to borrow. The figures below are dated examples already used on this site, not a price for your course or a lender offer. Your university's own cost of attendance is the starting point.
The short answer
- The USA tuition example here is for one private-university programme, not every MS course.
- The living figures are university estimates, not a national visa minimum.
- Conversions use 1 USD = Rs 95.1, checked 23 October 2026. Your bank's exchange rate and charges may differ.
- On Rs 40 lakh outstanding at repayment, illustrative annual rates of 9 to 10 percent over 10 years give an EMI of about Rs 50,670 to Rs 52,860 a month, before moratorium interest or fees.
Keep the cost parts separate
These 2025-26 university figures are examples, not a combined budget for one student. Do not add the tuition example to a different university's living estimate and call that your course cost. Check the fee period and your university's current cost of attendance.
| Cost part | Dated figure or check | INR guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Check your university's official fee page. Johns Hopkins 2025-26 ITGL program: USD 63,360 per year, about Rs 60 lakh. Private university, example only. | About Rs 60 lakh per year in this example only |
| Living expenses | 2025-26 university estimates: USD 23,712 (University of Iowa) to USD 29,255 (Johns Hopkins, sum of the five living lines, excluding health insurance) per year, about Rs 22.5 to 27.8 lakh. University estimates, not a government minimum. | About Rs 22.5 to 27.8 lakh per year, not a visa minimum |
| I-901 SEVIS fee | USD 350 for F or M applicants, ICE checked 26 October 2026 | About Rs 33,285 |
| Visa application fee | USD 185, non-refundable, State Department checked 26 October 2026 | About Rs 17,594 |
| Other costs | Use your university's cost of attendance and check insurance, travel, bank charges and any other fees | No combined allowance is stated here |
EMI range: an illustration, not a quote
Using the unchanged calculator, Rs 40 lakh outstanding when repayment starts, 120 monthly payments and illustrative annual rates of 9 to 10 percent give about Rs 50,670 to Rs 52,860 a month. These illustrations were computed for this article dated 2 November 2026. They do not include moratorium interest, fees or later rate changes.
This is a loan illustration, not a claim that Rs 40 lakh covers a USA MS. Enter your own borrowing amount in the calculator and compare the repayment with a cautious first salary in Reality Check. No salary figure is assumed in this article.
The moratorium can change the repayment balance
A break from EMI is not necessarily a break from interest. This site's calculator models simple interest during the course and grace period. If it is not paid, that interest is added to the repayment balance. A lender's actual charging and disbursement terms may differ.
Read the moratorium guide, then test paying study interest and leaving it unpaid. Ask the lender in writing how interest is charged, when it is added to the balance and when EMI begins if the first job is delayed.
TCS: separate self-funded money from loan funds
Under the rule effective 1 April 2026, self-funded education remittances above Rs 10 lakh in a financial year attract 2 percent TCS. TCS is nil on a qualifying financial-institution education loan. Read the TCS 2026 guide and ask your bank how it will treat your transfer. We do not assume the treatment of a mixed loan-and-savings transfer.
Visa fees and the OPT proposal are different risks
The F-1 fee guide, checked 26 October 2026, lists USD 350 for SEVIS and USD 185 for the visa application. At 1 USD = Rs 95.1 on 23 October 2026, those are separate payments of about Rs 33,285 and Rs 17,594. Paying them does not promise a visa. Check the embassy and school instructions.
Read the F-1 fee guide. The October 2026 OPT fee proposal is not a final rule or a current student bill. Schools would owe the proposed fee and may pass it on, but what each school will do is not decided. Do not add a proposed fee to your current bill. Test a delayed or changed work path instead.
Five checks before borrowing
- Get your university's current tuition and cost of attendance, with the period each amount covers.
- Keep living costs, visa fees and other costs separate. Do not treat university examples as a national visa minimum.
- Run the calculator with your borrowing amount and test the Bad scenario. Check a cautious salary in Reality Check.
- Ask the lender in writing about moratorium interest, the EMI start date and what changes if work is delayed.
- Check TCS treatment with your bank and watch the dated OPT guide. Read the USA country guide before building your final budget.
